How Hard Is To Make Paper Pellets In The Pellet Mill? Wood pellets have grown considerable in appeal over the last decade as a home heating option, and due to climate change and the cost of oil, the growth of the wood pellet market is set to continue. However, wood pellets are only one form of fuel, you can in fact compress many other materials into pellet form, for example paper and cardboard. There is a huge amount of paper and cardboard waste created in the UK from packaging and other sectors. However, much of this waste just goes to landfill. Even the waste which is supposedly recycled is sent to China, which is hardly very green. However this waste can be compressed into pellets and used in pellet stoves and boilers or even just an open fire or standard solid fuel stove. The video below shows the pellet boiler at PelHeat burning a collection of fuel pellets made from wood, other biomass materials and cardboard pellets, please click below. However, it must be noted that paper and cardboard pellets do generate more ash, and not every pellet stove or boiler can deal with this increase in ash. The PelHeat Pellet Stove and Boiler Guide goes into these issues in more detail. In terms of making pellets from paper and cardboard, the process is very similar to making wood pellets, however the raw material doe create some unique issues. For example, before the paper or cardboard is ready for the pellet mill, it needs to go through some form of size reduction, i.e. a hammer mill. The problem is milling very dry cardboard gives the particles a static charge, and makes the material very fluffy, lightly spraying the cardboard with water does to the most part resolve this issue. |
