Pellet Press and Wood Pellets For Fuel

Most people are familiar with burning logs, some with burning wood chips and very few with burning sawdust. Some people are familiar with burning wood pellets, however really it is still a relatively small market. The reason wood chip and sawdust burners were developed was to try and create a wood burner that was self feeding.

However what they found was while reducing the wood in size made it flow, the flow was often stopped due to bridging. The bridging is due to the fact of size reduction reduces the density of the raw material. Therefore the resistance on the walls of the hopper is greater then the force of the material. Also with reducing the wood in size it meant that larger fuel stores where required to store the same amount of fuel as the density of the wood had been reduced. This therefore is partly one of the benefits of pellets. Wood pellets flow like a liquid, therefore work well in hoppers and do not bridge. The reason for this is a uniform shape and size but most importantly a high density. This high density is achieved in the pellet press. As the wood enters the pellet press is it forced between a roller and die. As the wood gets pushed through the holes in the die the pressure this generates causes heat, this heat melts the natural lignin from within the wood which is what binds the pellets together. The wood pellets then leave the pellet press very hot, and need to be cooled before they can be used. The pellet press is not a simple piece of equipment to operate without the right knowledge and experience. Many people try and purchase a cheap pellet press and start making wood pellets straight away. They soon learn its just not that simple, and need help. To provide something other than a cheap re-branded animal feed pellet press, we now offer the UK made Mini Pellet Mill.
