Renewable Energy From Making And Burning Wood Pellets Our dependence on fossil fuels and our lack of investment and research into alternative energy solutions has left us in a difficult situation. Climate experts are stating we only have a certain amount of time to reduce our use of fossil fuels before its too late. Whether you believe in climate change or not, the main point is the cost of fossil fuels and how such a massive industry only benefits the few. Alternative energy and renewable energy solutions can help us to generate jobs and produce cheaper energy, while at the same time been more responsible with our environment. One of our major sources of energy is biomass. Biomass is plant matter, but basically its trapped solar energy. There are many forms of biomass, wood is one form. Biomass in its raw state often contains a lot of moisture and also has a low density. Through compression into pellets biomass is transformed into a high efficiency fuel. Please watch the video below to see biomass pellets. At PelHeat, we educate on the process of making pellets and the equipment used, for instance the pellet mill. Renewable energy is so important to our future energy supply as we can replace the energy we use. However some biomass is better than others due to fact it grows faster. For instance pine grows much faster than oak, however pine is still relatively slow growing compared to other forms of biomass for renewable energy. One of the fastest growing wood species is short rotation coppice willow which can be harvested every 3 years. If you look at hemp though this beats all forms of wood for yields. From seed to harvest only takes 3 months, and drying is not required. Hemp pellets also produce very little ash, the same as wood. Click below for videos. |
