The growth of the wood pellet fuel market has led to more individuals and business been interested in the equipment used to produce pellets. However, due to a lack of knowledge and experience, some people have been purchasing pellet mills to make wood pellets which are just not suitable. For example, most pellet mills sold on the internet are actually feed pellet mills, and not really designed for processing wood into pellet form. Pellet mills were originally used for making animal feed pellets, wood pellet fuel came along much later. Animal feed pellet mills are designed to process low density, soft material into pellet form. However wood fibre is a much more difficult material to compress into pellet form due to its density. To be able to produce a wood pellet, the pellet mill needs more heat and more power than a standard animal feed pellet mill has. For example on large scale wood pellet production dry steam conditioners are used to raise the temperature of the wood fibre to over 100 degrees to melt the natural wood lignin to bind the pellet together and reduce load on the pellet press. Also most wood pellet mills have a double gear reduction gearbox installed to give the low speed torque required to process wood. The other problem is there is a lot of miss-selling on the internet, with re-sellers claiming pellet mills are wood pellet machines when they are animal feed pellet presses. Therefore you do have to be careful when buying online. It's best to do your research before trying to buy a pellet press.
