Preparing Material For A Wood Pellets Machine Due to concerns over climate change and our heavy dependence on oil, the wood pellets market over the last decade has grown to be a serious contender in the green energy market. Wood pellets are compressed wood fibre which makes transportation and storage much more affordable. Pellets also make combustion much more efficient. So how are wood pellets made? Wood pellets are produced in a pellet mill, also known as a pellet machine. Through heat and compression the wood fibre is formed into a pellet. However to describe the process in such a way would make it appear simple, however the reality is far from a simple process. Making a 'pellet' is fairly straight forward, the true skill is been able to produce quality pellets at a high productivity with minimum energy consumption. It is possible to make pellets on a small or large scale. The advantages for large scale production are reduced costs per ton of pellets. However with large scale production there is always a certain amount of transportation involved which is also a cost. Small scale production will have a higher cost per ton, however will have lower transportation costs as the end user will generally be closer to the plant. Raw material and pellet transportation is often overlooked, however it is a crucial part of the process. The current wood pellets fuel market has a lot of potential, and that potential is set to grow in the future with torrefied wood pellets. Torrefaction is a process where the wood is heated to release matter which is not desirable as a fuel. The results are quite remarkable. The wood takes on an appearance very similar to coal. The wood also has the ability to repel water, and has a very low moisture content. Also no smoke is produced during combustion. This ability to repel water is very important to lower storage costs. |
