The Differences In Making Wood And Biomass Pellets

Wood pellets are growing year on year as a popular alternative to oil and gas and as a more efficient fuel than burning simply logs or wood chips. However, there are wood pellets and biomass pellets, both are fuel pellets but what are the differences? Well, actually wood pellets and biomass fuel pellets are the same thing.

Where wood pellets are a more specific term, a biomass pellet is made from any organic matter which can be used as a fuel, hence wood pellets. There are various different grades of wood pellets, from premium which are used in home stoves and boilers, to industrial grade which are used in large boilers for heat and also to generate power in coal power stations. However, there is a much larger range of materials used for biomass pellets, please view the video below for an example of biomass fuel pellets. As you can see from the video, straws and grasses can also be used to produce fuel pellets. The advantages been that wood is not always available, or cannot and should not be used unless it is sustainable. For instance trees generally grow a lot slower than most biomass materials, meaning we consume the wood faster than we can replace it. However with annual crops we can consume and replace in equal measure. One of the most important future biomass fuel pellets, are those made from the waste from food crops. Using the waste from food production can lower the cost of food and fuel, and the two are not in direct competition as they come from different parts of the crop. We need to look at fuel and fuel production differently, and also encourage it on a smaller scale. We offer small pellet mills and plants for all wood and biomass materials.
